What is Magnesium Malate?
Magnesium Malate is an essential mineral and is an electrolyte which plays a key role in numerous bodily processes. While a good number of foods are rich in Magnesium, deficiencies are very frequent in the standard western diet.
Magnesium Malate is a type of magnesium supplement made by combining elemental magnesium with malic acid and contains 15% elemental magnesium by weight. (1500 mg contains 225 mg of elemental magnesium.)
Recommended Dosage
It's recommended taking a dosage of 1500 mg (3 capsules) per day, on an empty stomach. This dosage provides about half of an adult’s daily magnesium requirement (225 mg of elemental magnesium). This dosage can be taken twice per day if working to correct a serious magnesium deficiency. It's not recommended exceeding 6 capsules per day unless directed by a physician, as it is possible to get too much magnesium and 3000 mg of Magnesium Malate will provide a full day’s requirement before taking into account magnesium obtained through diet.
Magnesium Malate Side Effects
Magnesium Malate is well tolerated and is unlikely to cause side effects when taken at recommended dosages. Reported side effects of Magnesium Malate include nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Magnesium Malate can interfere with some medications including diuretics, antibiotics, and bisphosphonates. It’s not recommended to exceed 6,000 mg per day as consuming too much magnesium can cause magnesium toxicity. Symptoms of magnesium toxicity include low blood pressure, facial flushing, weakness, and heart problems.
